The Sit Command - Training Challenge

by the K9 Guy, 01-08-11

Read more about Training Challenges here.

THE SIT COMMAND: A solid sit is probably one of the easiest commands to begin with any dog. A finished sit command involves a dog simply sitting with its rear on ground. With practice, reliability should be sought around distractions while diminishing the need to repeat the command. Sit is a stationary command and should be worked to include a built in stay. Extended sits (over 2-3 mins) can be physically uncomfortable for many dogs.

USES: Sit can be used to keep your dog calm and well mannered at various times - before meals, while stopped during walks, when guests are entering your home, outdoors with neighbors passing by the home, etc.

Rate your dog's ability with SIT:

INTRODUCTORY STAGES: Dog assumes a sitting position with help or treats but does not hold the position on its own.

BEGINNER: Dog will sit WITHOUT help or treats unless distracted. Dog can reliably hold a sit for 10-15 seconds.

INTERMEDIATE: Dog will sit on first request and hold position for 1-2 minutes, even around most distractions. Dog can go into a sit from a down position. Dog will sit outdoors, in the rain/snow, etc.

ADVANCED: Dog will reliably sit and hold position for 2-3 minutes in all circumstances, on first request. Dog will sit if commanded from motion (while running), and at distance (away from owner). Dog will sit on elevated or unusual surfaces.

Training Challenge : Assess your dog's current performance with the sit command (above) and work during this month toward the next level of achievement. If you're already advanced, find 3 new ways to diversify your dog's reliability with "sit"!
