Support a Local Shelter or Rescue

by The K9 Guy, 11-28-18

This time of year with Thanksgiving and Christmas, many people kindly donate time, gifts, or money to various charities. For dog lovers, there's no shortage of worthy options. For me, I prefer supporting local charities. There's something to be said for keeping money local, and seeing how it's being spent with your own eyes. If you're inclined to support a local shelter or rescue, money is something they all need.

But in addition to money, most shelters can use a variety of supplies. Things like food, cleaning supplies, beds/bedding, toys, etc. A quick call and most will be happy to tell you what types of donated items they need and/or can accept. Donating items allows you to make a visit - again, always nice to see where your donation(s) will be used.

Another way to support local rescues and shelters is to volunteer. Many are run entirely by volunteers, and are continually seeking others who can help with cleaning cages, walking dogs, errands, and more. The gift of your time is something that can be more valuable to many organizations than financial support. Many hands make light work!

And finally, opportunistic support for local rescues can always be offered by adopting! If you're considering adding a new dog to your family this time of year, shelter animals can make great pets! While you can often find specific breeds through rescues and shelters, there are also many mixed breeds. Aside from each one being "unique and one-of-a-kind", mixed breeds often enjoy healthy, hybrid vigor. More on finding a new pet through shelters here.

This is a time of year to give thanks, count our blessings, and consider helping those less fortunate. Remembering our LOCAL, homeless pets can make this holiday season very special.
