Recalls - Training Challenge

Read more about Training Challenges here.

RECALLS: A solid recall is one of the most requested commands from owners. Recalls can open a new world of privileges to any dog that performs this command reliably. I typically teach this command so a dog returns to the front of an owner and sits automatically. Calling a dog to "COME" is very intuitive for owners, but requires a great deal of practice and a strong foundation in obedience for reliability.

USES: The uses for recalls are almost limitless, and they can be used in the home or outdoors. Anytime you need your dog to return to you or come to you, a recall is the "go to" command. Recalls can be used during play, during work, to challenge dogs mentally, and to keep dogs out of danger or trouble. In some cases it may be better to have a dog perform a down at a distance rather than a recall (if the dog is across a street with traffic, for instance).

Rate your dog's ability with the COME COMMAND:

INTRODUCTORY STAGES: Dog must be lured or helped using a leash or line to COME to the owner.

BEGINNER: Dog will COME without help or lures (treats) in calm settings without distractions. Dog must be helped into a finished position (sitting in front of owner).

INTERMEDIATE: Dog will COME without help or lures in all but the most distracting settings, and needs some help getting into a finished position.

ADVANCED: Dog reliably COMES in all settings and situations including extreme distractions (such as chasing rabbits/squirrels, running, playing, etc.), and sits quickly and reliably to finish without help.

Training Challenge : Assess your dog's current RECALL/COME performance (above) and work during this month toward the next level of achievement. If you're already advanced, work on further practice with this this command by challenging your dog in new environments and situations.
