Proactive Dog Training

by The K9 Guy, 04-10-08

As I discuss training issues on this site, I thought it worthwhile to discuss the overall concept of training. Sometimes I feel that very few people think about training their dog proactively. Sure, once a problem crops up they may consider training as a solution (or part of a solution), but I'd like to suggest that dog training should be more than that. Dog training should be something conscientious owners consider early in their pet's life...

Training, more than anything else, establishes good communication with your dog. It allows you to help your dog understand what you want, how to behave, rules, and so much more. It builds mutual trust and respect - both critical components of any healthy relationship.

Training can also be incorporated into play and exercise, for both of you. Why take your dog to the park to run when you can both go for a walk together. Adding commands to that walk further develops your communications skills, and allows your dog to focus on obedience. This in turn will tire your dog more thoroughly than any run, while it builds his self-confidence as he learns and improves. I see such walks become great bonding rituals over and over again.

And with training you can teach your dog all manner of commands. Things like a real "stay", or to go lie quietly across the room, or a "down" instead of chasing after the neighbor's cat. Real world commands that you can use every day to help your dog be better mannered, more calm, and challenged mentally.

In the end you'll find you have a well behaved companion that respects you. One that you'll enjoy spending time with, taking places, and who is a true part of your family. Yes, all this and more is what dog training can deliver. So again, why not consider dog training BEFORE your dog develops any problem behaviors? Before any bad or difficult days? Once you live with a well trained and respectful dog - you'll never want anything else...
