Christmas and a New Dog
Christmas will be here very soon, and I know many families consider bringing a new dog into their home at this time of year. If that is in your thoughts, I always encourage owners to understand that a pet requires care, love and leadership. If you're too busy or otherwise unable to provide these necessities, then perhaps getting a dog would be a better choice at some point in the future.
If you are able to fulfill these requirements, then I would strongly encourage you to decide on your new pet based on personality, not looks. Buying a pet based on breed alone, and expecting it to be something it may not be, can set the stage for a great deal of displeasure and difficulty for you and a new dog. All breeds have variations in temperament and personality, even within a single litter. Spend time with THE SPECIFIC DOG you are considering to assess whether he/she will be a good fit for you, your lifestyle, and your family.
Finally, there are many great dogs at shelters across this country. Even if you want a certain breed, most shelters and rescues have pedigree dogs available for adoption - some rescues even specialize in certain breeds. But if you enjoy the uniqueness of a one-of-a-king dog, nothing can beat a mutt. I have a soft spot in my heart for mixes, and as my own dogs will attest - MUTTS RULE !!!
