Winter Safety for Dogs
While we're still enjoying moderate weather here in Central Ohio, things will begin getting colder very soon. I think it's important to take a moment this time of year and suggest some safety items for dogs.
If you have dogs out in the cold weather, please make certain they have adequate protection and shelter from the elements. Also, as temperatures drop, make certain they have access to liquid water. Bowls of water will freeze during winter weather.
Another common problem we'll begin seeing soon is dogs falling through ice. Most dogs will venture onto frozen ponds, streams, and lakes without hesitation. For much of the winter, in most areas of the country, there is more time when ice is NOT SAFE than when it is.
During winter, if you allow your dog to run off leash, be certain he/she has a reliable recall and that you are there to provide necessary supervision. Even dogs that are good swimmers will find themselves in distress if they fall through ice. The frigid water and difficulty getting out can cause hypothermia which can prove fatal in minutes.
If your dog does fall through the ice - do not try to rescue him/her. Yes, I love dogs as much as you, but ice in Central Ohio should never be considered safe. There's no reason to create two victims instead of one. Some fire departments may offer assistance for an animal in distress, but avoidance is paramount. You should never underestimate the dangers of ice and cold water. Water with ice on it is typically in the 30's (F), and those temperatures can disrupt motor function and reasoning in minutes.
