FBI and Scent Detection
This interesting video describes new technology being deployed by the FBI to use and catalog scents in crime detection. The story mentions that dogs have been doing many diverse scenting jobs for ages. I was even reading about one company now using dogs to search for sewage leaks (claiming 87% accuracy) - a dog's nose is truly amazing.
While the story mentions that scent evidence is now admissible in court, there are actually cases pending to challenge this. While dog's are not 100% accurate, it will be interesting to see how their accuracy compares to solutions provided through science. Since dog's can't speak, this can lead to interpretation problems by the handler(s). A scientific solution could mitigate those issues....

What if the subject rode on a city bus? Or in a taxi? Or sat at busy lunch counter?
Multiple DNA exonerations have upset bogus scent evidence convictions in California, Texas and Florida.
The FBI is up to its eyes in using discredited scent evidence expert John Preston decades ago. Their new technology to bolster its viability and admissibility has a rare stench to it.
It's the FBI's mandate to investigate public corruption that effects the outcome of trials. If FBI Director Mueller isn't up to investigating his agency's own wrongdoing, he ought to find new employment; it appears that Bill Dillon's bogus John Preston scent evidence conviction allowed serial killer Ottis Toole to murder scores of others.
Dillon served over 27 years. In the very same Florida county, Brevard, Wilton Dedge was DNA exonerated four years earlier after serving 22 years over Preston's false testimony.
The FBI doesn't need their scent vacuum, however, President Obama and A. G. Holder do need a broom - to sweep out all the bad players in the FBI.
