Finding a Good Breeder
This story covers a kennel that is in trouble for a number of reasons, including selling designer mixed pups that weren't what the owners thought they were getting. The story discusses the importance of looking at the sire and dame of any puppy you're considering as a tool in gauging a breeder. That certainly can be helpful, as any reputable breeder should be very interested in showing you the parents and telling you all about their best qualities.
You should also understand that a great deal of a dog's personality is molded by experiences early in life, so look also for breeders that are working on healthy socialization exercises with their pups. Spend time so you can get to know the actual dog you're planning on buying or adopting - personalities will vary even among litter mates. Choose a good personality match for your family, and ask the breeder for their suggestions. A good breeder should be as interested in you as you are in them - they want their dogs to be in good homes and to succeed.
Please remember that rescues and shelters have many great dogs available as well, even pure-breeds if that's your desire.
