Family Wins Settlement Involving Assistance Dog
This story out of CT involves a family that was forced to move from their apartment. One of the children had an assistance dog for help with her Cerebral Palsy, but the landlord had a "no dogs allowed" policy. Attorneys took on this case pro bono. The family was awarded over $100k and allowed to move back in to their apartment.
The story is a good reminder that State and Federal laws require not only landlords to make certain accommodations for assistance dogs, but so must public offices, businesses, schools, etc. One odd point on the laws in OH - while assistance dogs must be permitted in such places, there is no requirement that allows dogs in training into such facilities to prepare them for this work. Probably an oversight, but one I hope will one day be rectified.
