Ohio Pit Bull Ban
Update 06-01-09: Ohio HB 79 would eliminate breed specific wording from Ohio's Revised Code. It needs a lot of support! Come discuss the latest on Ohio HB 79 and ways you can help at http://mutts.orb3.net/index.php?topic=46.0
I've posted entries over the past months on problems with Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) - the bottom line is it doesn't work. Several Ohio communities are already going down this black hole (Lakewood, Cincinnati, Springfield, Whitehall). For more detail, please visit this site:

On May 19th House Bill 568 was introduced into the Ohio House of Representatives, sponsored by Representative Tyrone Yates (D). In part the bill includes the following:
Sec. 955.111. (A) Beginning ninety days after the effective date of this section, no person shall own, keep, or harbor a dog that belongs to a breed that is commonly known as a pit bull dog.
(b) Not later than ninety days after the effective date of this section, a person who owns, keeps, or harbors a pit bull dog on the effective date of this section shall surrender the dog to the dog warden. Not later than ten days after receiving the dog, the dog warden shall euthanize the dog.
(C)(1) Beginning ninety days after the effective date of this section, if an officer has probable cause to believe that a dog is a pit bull dog, the officer may apply to a court of competent jurisdiction for a search warrant. The court shall issue a search warrant for the purposes requested if there is probable cause to believe that a dog is a pit bull dog.
(2) After obtaining a search warrant, an officer shall seize the pit bull dog and surrender the dog to the dog warden. Not later than ten days after receiving the dog, the dog warden shall euthanize the dog.
Yes, you're reading this correctly. If this bill passes and you own a pit bull you'll need to surrender it to be destroyed. Whether you like Pit Bulls or not, once a Bill like this passes it opens the door to further governmental control, wasted tax payer dollars, and declining personal responsibilities. If you don't have a Pit Bull and think it doesn't matter - think again. The dogs with the greatest number of bites annually are mutts and cocker spaniels - are they next?

I just came home from the dog park and was harassed by two women because I took my pitbull Ginger there. We visit the park frequently and she has never ever been aggressive toward any dog unless she was defending herself. This woman's dog attacked my pitbull, it was a huge fluffy labra-doodle dog. And of COURSE it was Ginger's fault. Apparently the dog had recently attacked by a pitbull so that gave HER dog the right to atttack mine, but yet it was my dogd fault? This is bullshit! My dog is the most beautiful loyal dog I have ever owned and the law must be crazy to think that they could ever take her away from me. Since all this has come out, if this bill goes through me and my fiance have already made the decision that we will move if it passes. She is like our daughter, how could these people want to kill pets that people see as their own children! It's ridiculous. And I have seen more small dogs attack people viciously than big dogs. Just because this or that pitbull attacked someone doesn't mean that they are all like that! And the dogs (all dogs in general) that attack people is the owners fault! If I teach a Chihuahua to attack it will! And one of my favorite shows (The Dog Whisperer) Ceasar uses Daddy A PITBULL as his perfect example of a dog! A PITBULL! People need to speak up!

I spent 6 months around pit bulls that didnt belong to me..every one of the 3 loved me and never had a problem..then one of them had a liter of 4...so i spent the 15 weeks raising them..they were the cutest and most loyal dogs you could ever have thought of..They would have defended me until death..but never once in the 15 weekds did they show any anger to me..they played together and loved mine and my boyfriends (at the time) company..after the relationship was over, the dog that loved me the most got weird, she wouldnt eat and became very alone..so it just goes to show you that dogs never forget..she was loyal and wonderful..i will someday own my own pit bulls and no law or banned will ever stop me..they will even be raised in my house, becuase i know that they will cuase no harm..i wont live in any state that bans pit bulls..doesnt the state have nything else to worry about...like drug inforcement, or ppor families...seriously..pits are only mean when they have to be..half the stories on the news with dog attacks, the dogs arent pits, the paper doesnt no what kind of dog it is..so they say it is a pit bull...giving them a bad name..those are the only dog bits we hear about.but they are not the only ones..seriously..think about the families that would lose their animals..the goverenment should re think all of this..

We live in the city of Cincinnati and my APBT was also attacked by a large, fluffy labradoodle while we were out on our daily 2-3 mile walk. The labradoodle charged us and I would NOT let me dog defend herself because of course, all blame would have been put on her had she injured the labradoodle. So the attacking dog bit her repeatedly on the hind quarters, drawing blood while I just tried to keep the two of us moving forward. Finally, two CARS came to our aid, honking their horns and virtually running up on the sidewalk in order to give us some refuge from the attacking dog. ALL dog breeds have the potential to be aggressive and mean. ALL dogs (and owners) should be treated as individuals and held personnaly accountable in cases of dog aggression/attacks. It should be dealt with on a personal level, NOT a legislative level!

My boyfriend and I have only been in Ohio for just over a year. We have also decided to leave Ohio if this law passes. We have 2 pits and one lab. They all get along with each other and are socialized with other dogs and people. They have never posed a threat to anyone except that bird or squirrel that they can't catch. I understand that some pits and any breed can be dangerous, but there are so many pits that aren't. It isn't fair to exterminate any breed. My mother's pug tries to bite my pits in the face every time they are together. They have never once bit back. The government needs to redirect the money and effort going into this bill toward something that will help everyone and bring people to Ohio, not force people out.

Oh my God, I'm only 16 years old and this makes me sick ! I have 2 pit bulls and a Austrailian Cattle Dog. They have never once fought or hurt a person. When you play with my dogs if they feel skin on their teeth or mouth they will let go . I will never give up my dogs . Like I told my mom, if they want my dogs they have to go through us first. My dogs mean more to me than almost anything in the world !

I realize that pit bulls are some what feared. But, why not give everyone a chance to make up their own minds about a breed. On Monday, 10/13/08, my daschund was attacked by a pit bull. It was a freak accident. I do not hold the owner responsible, because she used as much control as she possibly could to contain her pit on his leash. My dog was hurt, but he is alive! I feel sorry for those persons that have lost their animals to a not so good situation, and hope that legislation can look at this ban as a way to give the owners of these animals a chance to show what true, loyal and friendly companions they can be. Not ALL PIT BULLS are viscious and mean, they are lovable. Give them the chance to show what kind of animal they truely are.

Did the three dog attacks lead to your inability to spell correctly? Don't you think after the second time around you'd figure out what you're doing wrong? You know I heard that dogs can not only smell fear, but stupidity as well.
If you really think that all dogs are vicious creatures then I think you deserved to be bitten all three times.
The idea of passing this ban is ridiculous. It's just like saying that all persons of a certain race are prone to being murderers, rapists and robbers and they should be put to death because of their race - it's called stereotyping and racism (or "breedism"). It is the owner's responsibility to train the dog properly, therefore when a dog attacks someone, it's either the owner's fault or the person who was attacked simply being an idiot. The owner's of the attacking dogs need to be punished, not the dogs.

This is bullsh*t! i have 3 pitbulls that are all a bunch of babies, these "vicious" dogs run from my 2 cats. I love these dogs in a way that i have never loved anything, they make me happy when i am sad and they fight over who gets to lay on the couch with my husband, we take our dogs everywhere and have NEVER had a problem with our dogs, they love other people and other dogs, all they want to do is play and be with u, when i go to take the trash outside they whine til i come back in, to take away these dogs and just kill them because they 'might' bite is the dumbest thing i have ever heard, my cat will bite u faster than anyone of my dogs

Ohio has some of the strictest breed laws in the country presently. The dog you describe is definitely one that sounds as if it's a threat to the community. If so, it should go. However, as others have mentioned here, there are just as many problem dogs of other breeds, and many well behaved and friendly pits.

I'm a Veterinary Technician and have been working at a animal hospital for 2 years. Within these two years I deal with about 5-15 pitbulls daily. Not a single one of them so far has showed ANY signs of aggression. I've seen more labs and family friendly dogs that showed signs of aggression then the "aggressive breeds".

I wish just one of those dumb representatives could live with a pitt bull for one week, THey would truely fall in love with the breed and adopt one for themselves. I have two, and will probably never own another breed again. Accept German Shepherds, i've always loved that breed as well. NOBODY and I mean NOBODY would make me surrender my two kids....

my heart is breaking for all the pit bull owners in Ohio!!! I also own two Am. Staff. Terriers and have worked hard to rescue and rehome 7 others . not one of the rescue dogs knew me from addam , 2 of them were in physical pain as well as emotional termoil, not one of these bared a tooth to me, gave me the sideways look that says , hey watch what your doing your scaring me. Last but not least I am an owner of the breed and I would never in a million years own another breed. My babies are the most loal and egar to please dogs I have ever owned. And that is the final conclusion. When you are following the media so close, please understand that these stories that you are hearing really isn't giving you the whole truth. See these "family dogs" that are "so well taken care of" are not attaking because the where treated like a queen or king. These people are tieing them to trees, locking them in cages, beating them when they don't listen and not giving them any kind of time teach them right from wrong. You have to understand that it is easier to blame the dog that can't talk back than to blame yourself! Wake up people quit wasteing time and money about something you really have no clue on and try turning you attention to something that we need!

Now tell me, if Micheal Vicks "FIGHTING DOGS" can be rehabilitated. What makes you think that pitbulls are that bad of a bred that we need to waste our times? These dogs where bred to fight. "BRED" TO FIGHT! And now they are rehab dogs for the eldgerly. Yea they are very vicious!!!!LMAO! Come on now!
The problem is that people speak on situation that they are ignorant to! No one that as a problem with pitbulls has ever owned one. SO HOW DO YOU KNOW THEY ARE VICIOUS? You are really making yourself look very ignorant by your actions. You are a media follower and believe everything that you hear! I'm not sure how you was raised, but I was always told to be a leader not a follower. Guess we all can't be our own person, but what others want us to be! Lmao!
Last but not least I am an owner of the breed and I would never in a million years own another breed. My babies are the most loal and egar to please dogs I have ever owned. And that is the final conclusion. When you are following the media so close, please understand that these stories that you are hearing really isn't giving you the whole truth. See these "family dogs" that are "so well taken care of" are not attaking because the where treated like a queen or king. These people are tieing them to trees, locking them in cages, beating them when they don't listen and not giving them any kind of time teach them right from wrong. You have to understand that it is easier to blame the dog that can't talk back than to blame yourself! Wake up people quit wasteing time and money about something you really have no clue on and try turning you attention to something that we need!

seems to me like Ohio will become the next Nazi Germany. Euthanizing a breed of dogs that are misunderstood. Is this what its really coming down to? as a pit bull owner for the past 5 years i can say they are the most loyal and loving companions ever. take the owners that beat and torture dogs to fight and put THEM to sleep. NOBODY is taking my dogs. i will fight and die for them as i know they would do the same for me.
