Memorial Day - Military Working Dogs
With the Memorial Day Weekend upon us, I thought it would be interesting to dig around a bit and see what I could turn up about service dogs in the military. I ran into a very interesting site at http://www.militaryworkingdog.com/history/ that has compiled a nice history page regarding dogs in military service.
Some interesting facts to consider:
- Tens of thousands of dogs have served in the military, starting officially during WWII.
- Initially dogs were donated by private citizens to the military. 30 breeds were accepted, but the list was later narrowed to German Shepherds, Belgian Sheep Dogs, Doberman Pinschers, Farm Collies and Giant Schnauzers.
- Early training was also provided by volunteer civilian trainers. As demand for dogs in the military quickly grew, the Quartermaster Corps was placed in charge of training.
- At least one dog was issued combat medals for distinguished service, but that award was revoked since it was contrary to Army policy. Later, citations were allowed to be issued.
- One War dog, "Chips", was famous for attacking an enemy machine gun pillbox, seizing one man and causing the crew to surrender.
- Use of dogs in the military has steadily increased. During Viet Nam War 4,000 dogs were deployed, 281 were Killed In Action.
- There is an effort underway to see a US Postal Service stamp commemorating military service dogs.
During this weekend, my gratitude to all who serve... No matter how many feet they have.
